Assignment #15

While looking back on my first blog I have realized that I have accomplished all my goals for English 101. In assignment number 1 I stated that I would like to gain essential writing skills that will help me throughout my college career. I feet like I have gained those skills to help me be a better writer, and it will help me throughout my college career. I also said that my prewriting skills can be improved. I feel like my prewriting is an aspect that has been greatly improved. Now I clearly play my ideas out and it sets as a guide to writing successfully. Lastly I stated my revision can be improved. I feel like my revisions have also greatly improved. Peer review is a big revision process I have improved throughout English 101. I have learned that peer review can be very helpful, and also how to revise on my own.

Yes I plan to continue to grow as a writer. I plan to take English 102 in the future to grow even more. I can still learn new things about writing to polish up anything that I am rusty on. I feel I am at a good place with my writing, but it wont hurt to take my writing skills even further.

Assignment #13

I analyzed Frank D. LoMonte's essay, in that essay we had a lot of useful background information.
that background information made his argument more successful because it helped him state is case and prove it. He states the case Amanda Tatro  vs the University of Minnesota was a "hard case" and he was able to back that up with background information. Specifically by informing the reader on what the Facebook postings said. Also how the University punished her.

I also feel he used a trustworthy tone. I feel as if any reader would take his side and agree that this was a hard case. He made it feel as if he was a students also and how would you feel if that happened to you. I felt like he used a trustworthy tone while reading his paper. It also helped his argument because readers are more easily connected to his paper through his tone used.

He also made his stance obvious, and stated a purpose for writing his. That also helped his argument because it gives the reader a purpose for reading this argument. He said that students may be afraid to speak out on campus now, and I believe that is a good purpose for writing a paper because it is true. It also applies to millions that do attend school and are active speakers, or use social networking sites.

Assignment #12

My most compelling evidence is my claim that high school athletes can progress their basketball skills by going to college. When high school athletes jump straight to the NBA they still have the game and mindset of a high school student. College can help these student athletes progress their game. Higher level coaches and trainer can help athletes adjust to the next level. Also playing in college games can help high school students adjust to the faster pace of the game, and the atmosphere of playing on a big stage. Going to college even if it is just for one year can help athletes progress their game, and get themselves ready for the next level.

My weakest evidence is my claim that spending one extra year in school can help students become more educated. Students spending one year in college should become more educated, but you never know if they are just blowing off their classes. I assume a student athlete that is serious about becoming a professional basketball player, or that is serious about their education should take their classes serious. This would allow them to get a college education and take classes they didn't get the chance to take during high school. It makes sense that they would become more educated, but i would say its my weakest because we never know how serious they are taking their classes.

Assignment #11

While writing i tend to make a lot of grammatical errors. I was never so good at grammar throughout elementary school and high school. I have gotten better since I have been in college. Another error I tend to make is misplacing sentences. Sometimes I put sentences in the wrong spot, and they would sound better if I placed them somewhere else. Lastly the biggest error I make while writing my papers is procrastinating. I tend to procrastinate and end up with a whole paper to write the night before it is due.

My grammatical errors can be fixed if I revise my paper and really look into each sentence. Sometimes I tend to use run-on sentences and comma splices. The time I have spent in writing classes during college I have been more aware of my errors, and I have found better methods to fix them. I have also learned how to not make errors in the first place and use punctuation correctly.

My misplacing sentences error can also be fixed through reviewing my paper. While rereading my papers I have found may sentences out of place and moved them around to sound better. Peer review also helps with this error.

Procrastination is just something I have to work at myself. Hopefully I can fix this huge error as soon as possible.

Assignment #10

I think the peer review we do in class is effective because it allows us to get another perspective on our paper. The checklist we are given also helps the peer review process. It allows us to know exactly what we are looking for while we are reviewing our peers papers. I believe peer review is effective because it lets us get another perspective on our papers, and see all the little mistakes we made while writing. The peer review processed can be more improved by students taking the process more seriously.

I think my strengths as a peer reviewer are giving people feedback on their wording and structure. If they have a sentence that doesn't sound right or is out of place I can give them good feedback on that aspect of their paper. My weakness would have to be finding grammatical errors. I am not that great at finding grammatical errors and giving people feedback on where they should or shouldn't have added punctuation.

An ideal peer review process would be on that both students take seriously and help each others papers get drastically better. I find it helpful to do peer review at an early stage of the writing process. The best time would be right after writing the first rough draft. I think smaller peer review groups are better than large ones. With a small group with about three people students are more able to get in depth with the paper and really help each other. We do have an appropriate amount of time to do peer review. Two class periods is a generous amount of time given.

Assignment #9

What I have enjoyed most about my college experience so far is the freedom. In college you are not treated like a baby anymore. Professors let you make your own decision, and its up to you to either sink or swim. It is also your choice to go to class or not. In high school you were forced to go to class, or if you cut a class you got in trouble for it. College allows every student to make their own decisions and be responsible.

The least best experience I have had during college would have to be interacting with my college community. There is not much to do on campus. When i'm on campus I just go to class then I leave right after i'm done with all my classes. The biggest reason I don't stay on campus and get involved with activities on campus is because I also work. Work occupies a lot of my time, so i don't have much time to chill on campus for that long. With all that said the least best thing I have experience thus far would be really experiencing hanging  out in a college community, and taking part in activities on campus.
